RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate the trend of refractive error among elementary school students in grades 1 to 3 in Hubei Province, analyze the relevant factors affecting myopia progression, and develop a model to predict myopia progression and the risk of developing high myopia in children. METHODS: Longitudinal study. Using a cluster-stratified sampling method, elementary school students in grades 1 to 3 (15,512 in total) from 17 cities in Hubei Province were included as study subjects. Visual acuity, cycloplegic autorefraction, and height and weight measurements were performed for three consecutive years from 2019 to 2021. Basic information about the students, parental myopia and education level, and the students' behavioral habits of using the eyes were collected through questionnaires. RESULTS: The baseline refractive errors of children in grades 1 ~ 3 in Hubei Province in 2019 were 0.20 (0.11, 0.27)D, -0.14 (-0.21, 0.06)D, and - 0.29 (-0.37, -0.22)D, respectively, and the annual myopia progression was - 0.65 (-0.74, -0.63)D, -0.61 (-0.73, -0.59)D and - 0.59 (-0.64, -0.51)D, with the prevalence of myopia increasing from 17.56%, 20.9%, and 34.08% in 2019 to 24.16%, 32.24%, and 40.37% in 2021 (Χ2 = 63.29, P < 0.001). With growth, children's refractive error moved toward myopia, and the quantity of myopic progression gradually diminished. (F = 291.04, P = 0.027). The myopia progression in boys was less than that in girls in the same grade (P < 0.001). The change in spherical equivalent refraction in myopic children was smaller than that in hyperopic and emmetropic children (F = 59.28, P < 0.001), in which the refractive change in mild myopia, moderate myopia, and high myopia children gradually increased (F = 73.12, P < 0.001). Large baseline refractive error, large body mass index, and high frequency of eating sweets were risk factors for myopia progression, while parental intervention and strong eye-care awareness were protective factors for delaying myopia progression. The nomogram graph predicted the probability of developing high myopia in children and found that baseline refraction had the greatest predictive value. CONCLUSION: Myopia progression varies by age, sex, and myopia severity. Baseline refraction is the most important factor in predicting high myopia in childhood. we should focus on children with large baseline refraction or young age of onset of myopia in clinical myopia prevention and control.

RESUMO

Introduction: To stabilize the edible oil market, it is necessary to determine the oil yield in advance, so the accurate and fast technology of estimating rapeseed yield is of great significance in agricultural production activities. Due to the long flowering time of rapeseed and the characteristics of petal color that are obviously different from other crops, the flowering period can be carefully considered in crop classification and yield estimation. Methods: A field experiment was conducted to obtain the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral images. Field measurements consisted of the reflectance of flowers, leaves, and soils at the flowering stage and rapeseed yield at physiological maturity. Moreover, GF-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite images were collected to compare the applicability of yield estimation methods. The abundance of different organs of rapeseed was extracted by the spectral mixture analysis (SMA) technology, which was multiplied by vegetation indices (VIs) respectively to estimate the yield. Results: For the UAV-scale, the product of VIs and leaf abundance (AbdLF) was closely related to rapeseed yield, which was better than the VIs models for yield estimation, with the coefficient of determination (R2) above 0.78. The yield estimation models of the product of normalized difference yellowness index (NDYI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and AbdLF had the highest accuracy, with the coefficients of variation (CVs) below 10%. For the satellite scale, most of the estimation models of the product of VIs and rapeseed AbdLF were also improved compared with the VIs models. The yield estimation models of the product of AbdLF and renormalized difference VI (RDVI) and EVI (RDVI×AbdLF and EVI×AbdLF) had the steady improvement, with CVs below 13.1%. Furthermore, the yield estimation models of the product of AbdLF and normalized difference VI (NDVI), visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI), RDVI, and EVI had consistent performance at both UAV and satellite scales. Discussion: The results showed that considering SMA could improve the limitation of using only VIs to retrieve rapeseed yield at the flowering stage. Our results indicate that the abundance of rapeseed leaves can be a potential indicator of yield prediction during the flowering stage.

RESUMO

The effective and accurate aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation facilitates evaluating crop growth and site-specific crop management. Considering that rice accumulates AGB mainly through green leaf photosynthesis, we proposed the photosynthetic accumulation model (PAM) and its simplified version and compared them for estimating AGB. These methods estimate the AGB of various rice cultivars throughout the growing season by integrating vegetation index (VI) and canopy height based on images acquired by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The results indicated that the correlation of VI and AGB was weak for the whole growing season of rice and the accuracy of the height model was also limited for the whole growing season. In comparison with the NDVI-based rice AGB estimation model in 2019 data (R2 = 0.03, RMSE = 603.33 g/m2) and canopy height (R2 = 0.79, RMSE = 283.33 g/m2), the PAM calculated by NDVI and canopy height could provide a better estimate of AGB of rice (R2 = 0.95, RMSE = 136.81 g/m2). Then, based on the time-series analysis of the accumulative model, a simplified photosynthetic accumulation model (SPAM) was proposed that only needs limited observations to achieve R2 above 0.8. The PAM and SPAM models built by using 2 years of samples successfully predicted the third year of samples and also demonstrated the robustness and generalization ability of the models. In conclusion, these methods can be easily and efficiently applied to the UAV estimation of rice AGB over the entire growing season, which has great potential to serve for large-scale field management and also for breeding.

RESUMO

AIM: To observe the surgical effects of slanted bilateral lateral recession (S-BLR) versus conventional bilateral lateral recession (C-BLR) in convergence insufficiency intermittent exotropia (CI-IXT). METHODS: Using a randomized, double-blind, prospective design, 22 patients with CI-IXT who were admitted to Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from July 2019 to December 2020 were included. Patients were randomly divided into either S-BLR or C-BLR group for their subsequent strabismus surgery. All patients were followed up for 12mo. Near deviation, distant deviation, and near-distance difference (NDD) were measured in all patients. RESULTS: Twelve months after surgery, NDD improvement was 10 (8, 13) prismatic degrees (PD) in S-BLR group and 3 (1, 6) PD in C-BLR group (P=0.011). The near deviation of S-BLR group was 0 (-2, 2) PD, while that of C-BLR group was -4 (-6, -3) PD (P=0.005). Before and after surgery, the difference in the distant deviation between the two groups was not statistically significant. There was no statistically significant difference in near stereopsis between the two groups (P=0.380) at 12mo. The success rate at 12mo after operation was 90.91% and 72.73% in the two groups (P=0.280). CONCLUSION: CI-IXT patients treated with S-BLR have better surgical outcomes than those treated with C-BLR, which indicates S-BLR is a safe and effective operation pattern.

RESUMO

As a promising method, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral remote sensing (RS) has been extensively studied in precision agriculture. However, there are numerous problems to be solved in the data acquisition and processing, which limit its application. In this study, the Micro-MCA12 camera was used to obtain images at different altitudes. The piecewise empirical line (PEL) method suitable for predicting the reflectance of different ground objects was proposed to accurately acquire the reflectance of multi-altitude images by comparing the performance of the conventional methods. Several commonly utilized vegetation indices (VIs) were computed to estimate the rice growth parameters and yield. Then the rice growth monitoring and yield prediction were implemented to verify and evaluate the effects of radiometric calibration methods (RCMs) and UAV flying altitudes (UAV-FAs). The results show that the variation trends of reflectance and VIs are significantly different due to the change in component proportion observed at different altitudes. Except for the milking stage, the reflectance and VIs in other periods fluctuated greatly in the first 100 m and remained stable thereafter. This phenomenon was determined by the field of view of the sensor and the characteristic of the ground object. The selection of an appropriate calibration method was essential as a result of the marked differences in the rice phenotypes estimation accuracy based on different RCMs. There were pronounced differences in the accuracy of rice growth monitoring and yield estimation based on the 50 and 100 m-based variables, and the altitudes above 100 m had no notable effect on the results. This study can provide a reference for the application of UAV RS technology in precision agriculture and the accurate acquisition of crop phenotypes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The causal association between educational attainment (EA) and stroke remains unclear. Hence, a novel multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) approach was applied to solve this issue. METHODS: The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from a recent genome-wide association study (GWAS) on years of schooling served as instruments. Univariable mendelian randomization (MR) and MVMR analyses were performed to detect the relationship between genetically predicted EA and the stroke risk. In the MVMR, cigarette consumption, alcohol consumption, body mass index (BMI), intelligence, and hypertension were adjusted. The summary statistics for stroke from the MEGASTROKE consortium included 446,696 participants (40,585 cases of stroke and 34,217 cases of ischemic stroke), most of whom were of European descent. RESULTS: In the univariable MR, genetically predicated EA could decrease the risks of total stroke (OR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.61-0.72, P = 2.70 × 10-23), ischemic stroke (OR = 0.67, 95% CI 0.61-0.73, P = 2.58 × 10-18), large artery atherosclerosis (OR = 0.51, 95% CI 0.40-0.64, P = 1.80 × 10-8), small vessel stroke (OR = 0.60, 95% CI 0.49-0.73, P = 5.59 × 10-7), and cardioembolic stroke (OR = 0.81, 95% CI 0.68-0.96, P = 1.46 × 10-2) using the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) estimator. Higher EA might be negatively correlated with the odds of total stroke (OR = 0.62, 95% CI 0.50-0.77, P = 1.44 × 10-5), ischemic stroke (OR = 0.63, 95% CI 0.50-0.80, P = 1.41 × 10-4), and cardioembolic stroke (OR = 0.59, 95% CI 0.39-0.90, P = 0.01), but was not significant in large artery atherosclerosis (OR = 0.65, 95% CI 0.37-1.15, P = 0.14) and small vessel stroke (OR = 0.68, 95% CI 0.41-1.13, P = 0.14) after controlling other exposures. CONCLUSIONS: We found that genetically predicated higher EA decreased the risks of total stroke, ischemic stroke, and cardioembolic stroke, independent of smoking, alcohol consumption, BMI, intelligence, and hypertension.

RESUMO

Calmodulins (CAMs) and calmodulin-like proteins (CMLs) can participate in the regulation of various physiological processes via sensing and decoding Ca2+ signals. To reveal the characteristics of the CAM/CML family in Ginkgo biloba, a comprehensive analysis was performed at the genome-wide level. A total of 26 CAMs/CMLs, consisting of 5 GbCAMs and 21 GbCMLs, was identified on 11 out of 12 chromosomes in G. biloba. They displayed a certain degree of multiplicity in their sequences, albeit with conserved EF hands. Collinearity analysis suggested that tandem rather than segmental or whole-genome duplications were likely to play roles in the evolution of the Ginkgo CAM/CML family. Furthermore, GbCAMs/GbCMLs were grouped into higher, lower, and moderate expression in magnitude. The cis-acting regulatory elements involved in phytohormone-responsiveness within GbCAM/GbCML promotors may explain their varied expression profiles. The ectopic expression of a GbCML gene (Gb_30819) in transgenic Arabidopsis led to phenotypes with significantly shortened root length and seedling height, and decreased yields of both pods and seeds. Moreover, an electrophoresis mobility shift assay demonstrated the Ca2+-binding activity of Gb_30819 in vitro. Altogether, these results contribute to insights into the characteristics of the evolution and expression of GbCAMs/GbCMLs, as well as evidence for Ca2+-CAM/CML pathways functioning within the ancient gymnosperm G. biloba.

RESUMO

Thermal stress is considered one of the main causes of mass scleractinian coral degradation; however, it is still unknown how corals can adapt to future global warming. In this study, 11 strains of coral-associated Flavobacteria were shown to produce zeaxanthin, a carotenoid antioxidant, which may help coral holobionts to alleviate thermal stress. In addition, a novel zeaxanthin-producing Flavobacterium, designated R38T, was identified using polyphasic taxonomy. Although strain R38T shared a maximum 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 93% with Mesoflavibacter aestuarii KYW614T, phylogenetic analyses based on whole genome and 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain R38T forms a distinct branch in a robust cluster composed of strain R38T and Leptobacterium flavescens KCTC 22160T under the family Flavobacteriaceae. Strain R38T exhibited average nucleotide identities of 70.2% and 72.5% for M. aestuarii KYW614T and L. flavescens KCTC 22160T, respectively. The only detected respiratory quinone was menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The genomic DNA G + C content was 33.2 mol%. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified ninhydrin phospholipid, three unidentified ninhydrin-positive lipids, and three unidentified lipids. The major cellular fatty acids were iso - C15: 0, iso - C15: 0 ω6c, C16:2 DMA, and C13:1 ω3c. The distinct biochemical, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic, and phylogenomic differences from validly published taxa suggest that strain R38T represents a new species of a new genus, for which Prasinibacter corallicola gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain R38T (= MCCC 1K03889T = KCTC 72444T).

RESUMO

A Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, motile, aerobic bacterium (strain C21T) was isolated from coral and identified using polyphasic identification approach. Global alignment of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain C21T shares 95.7 % sequence identity to its closest neighbour, Marinibactrum halimedae NBRC 110095T, followed by other type strains with identities of lower than 95 %. The average nucleotide identity and average amino acid identity values between strain C21T and M. halimedae NBRC 110095T were 69.6 and 64.8 %, respectively, indicating that strain C21T may represent a new species in a new genus. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene and phylogenomic results indicated that strain C21T forms a distinct branch in the family Cellvibrionaceae. Cellular fatty acids and polar lipids could also readily distinguish strain C21T from closely related type strains. Therefore, strain C21T is suggested to represent a new species in a new genus, for which the name Sessilibacter corallicola gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is C21T (=MCCC 1K03260T=KCTC 62317T).

RESUMO

Members of the phylum Acidobacteria are ubiquitous in various environments. Soil acidobacteria have been reported to present a variety of strategies for their success in terrestrial environments. However, owing to lack of pure culture, information on animal-associated acidobacteria are limited, except for those obtained from 16S rRNA genes. To date, only two acidobacteria have been isolated from animals, namely strain M133T obtained from coral Porites lutea and Acanthopleuribacter pedis KCTC 12899T isolated from chiton. Genomics and physiological characteristics of strain M133T and A. pedis KCTC 12899T were compared with 19 other isolates (one strain from each genus) in the phylum Acidobacteria. The results revealed that strain M133T represents a new species in a new genus in the family Acanthopleuribacteraceae. To date, these two Acanthopleuribacteraceae isolates have the largest genomes (10.85-11.79 Mb) in the phylum Acidobacteria. Horizontal gene transfer and gene duplication influenced the structure and plasticity of these large genomes. Dissimilatory nitrate reduction and abundant secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters (including eicosapentaenoic acid de novo biosynthesis) are two distinct features of the Acanthopleuribacteraceae bacteria in the phylum Acidobacteria. The absence of glycoside hydrolases involved in plant polysaccharide degradation and presence of animal disease-related peptidases indicate that these bacteria have evolved to adapt to the animal hosts. In addition to low- and high-affinity respiratory oxygen reductases, enzymes for nitrate to nitrogen, and sulfhydrogenase were also detected in strain M133T, suggesting the capacity and flexibility to grow in aerobic and anaerobic environments. This study highlighted the differences in genome structure, carbohydrate and protein utilization, respiration, and secondary metabolism between animal-associated acidobacteria and other acidobacteria, especially the soil acidobacteria, displaying flexibility and versatility of the animal-associated acidobacteria in environmental adaption.

RESUMO

AIMS: Neointimal hyperplasia remains a major obstacle in vascular regeneration. Sca-1-positive progenitor cells residing within the vascular adventitia play a crucial role in the assemblage of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) and the formation of the intimal lesion. However, the underlying mechanisms during vascular injury are still unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: Aneointimal formation rat model was prepared by carotid artery injury using 2F-Forgaty. After vascular injury, Meox1 expressions time-dependently increased during the neointima formation, with its levels concurrently increasing in the adventitia, media, and neointima. Meox1 was highly expressed in the adventitia on the first day after vascular injury compared to the expression levels in the media. Conversely, by the 14th day post-injury, Meox1 was extensively expressed more in the media and neointima than the adventitia. Analogous to the change of Meox1 in injured artery, Sca-1+ progenitor cells increased in the adventitia wall in a time-dependent manner and reached peak levels on the 7th day after injury. More importantly, this effect was abolished by Meox1 knockdown with shRNA. The enhanced expression of SDF-1α after vascular injury was associated with the markedly enhanced expression levels of Sca1+ progenitor cell, and these levels were relatively synchronously increased within neointima by the 7th day after vascular injury. These special effects were abolished by the knockdown of Meox1 with shRNA and inhibition of CXCR4 by its inhibitor, AMD3100. Finally, Meox1 concurrently regulated SDF-1α expressions in VSMC via activating CDC42, and CDC42 inhibition abolished these effects by its inhibitor, ZCL278. Also, Meox1 was involved in activation of the CXCR4 expression of Sca-1+ progenitor cells by CDC42. CONCLUSIONS: Spatio-temporal model of Meox1 expression regulates theSca-1+progenitor cell migration during the formation of the neointima through the synergistic effect of Rho/CDC42 and SDF-1α/CXCR4.

RESUMO

Although a few semiconductors can directly absorb infrared light, their intrinsic properties like improper band-edge position and strong electron-hole interaction restrict further photocatalytic applications. Herein, we propose an exciton-mediated energy transfer strategy for realizing efficient infrared light response in heterostructures. Using black phosphorous/polymeric carbon nitride (BP/CN) heterojunction, CN could be indirectly excited by infrared light with the aid of nonradiatively exciton-based energy transfer from BP. At the same time, excitons are dissociated into free charge carriers at the interface of BP/CN heterojunction, followed by hole injection to BP and electron retainment in CN. As a result of these unique photoexcitation processes, BP/CN heterojunction exhibits promoted conversion rate and selectivity in amine-amine oxidative coupling reaction even under infrared light irradiation. This study opens a new way for the design of efficient infrared light activating photocatalysts.

RESUMO

Photocatalytic organic synthesis is mostly limited by the shortcomings of insufficient light absorption, high photogenerated electron-hole recombination rate and inadequate reactive sites of photocatalysts. To solve these problems, phosphorus-doped g-C3N4 with a porous structure was constructed. Benefiting from enhanced light absorption and electron-hole separation efficiency, PCNT has intensive oxygen activation ability to generate superoxide radicals, and is highly active in organic synthesis. In addition, PCNT has enhanced surface nucleophilicity, which is conducive to the carbon-carbon coupling process of the intermediate product benzaldehyde molecules and benzyl alcohol molecules in the benzoin condensation reaction. Metal-free PCNT is expected to replace the previously used highly toxic cyanide catalysts and provide a new way for the low-cost and efficient photocatalytic synthesis of benzoin.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The low quality of diffusion tensor image (DTI) could affect the accuracy of oncology diagnosis. METHODS: We present a novel sparse representation based denoising method for three dimensional DTI by learning adaptive dictionary with the context redundancy between neighbor slices. In this study, the context redundancy among the adjacent slices of the diffusion weighted imaging volumes is utilized to train sparsifying dictionaries. Therefore, higher redundancy could be achieved for better description of image with lower computation complexity. The optimization problem is solved efficiently using an iterative block-coordinate relaxation method. RESULTS: The effectiveness of our proposed method has been assessed on both simulated and real experimental DTI datasets. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations demonstrate the performance of the proposed method on the simulated data. The experiments on real datasets with different b-values also show the effectiveness of the proposed method for noise reduction of DTI. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed approach well removes the noise in the DTI, which has high potential to be applied for clinical oncology applications.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Metal artefacts seriously degrade the quality of the CT images. Blurring around the junctions between metal and non-metal regions in CT images, metal artefacts often prevent right diagnoses, and even lead to misdiagnoses of patients. The aim of the study was to devise a fast and robust method to improve the quality of the artefact-contaminated CT images. METHODS: The proposed artefact correction includes the following five steps: metal object segmentation, forward projection, region-based filling, adaptive scaling and final image reconstruction. RESULTS: The feasibility of the proposed method in correcting metal artefacts was validated by experiments on both simulated and clinical images. Experiments showed the proposed correction could lead to fast and effective reduction of metal artefacts in CT images. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with other methods, the proposed method has less computational cost and allows a feasible and easy implantation into current CT imaging systems.
